Pigmentation of skin is a very common issue and there are two types: hyperpigmentation (darker patches) and hypopigmentation (lighter patches). Let’s focus on hyperpigmentation since I get asked about this quite a lot. I can understand how annoying it can be to carry around pigmented skin when you desire it to be one-tone and one-color all over.

Top Causes

Hormones: A shift in hormones is the most well-known culprit giving rise to areas of skin that tend to produce more melanin and are therefore darker. Women going through menopause often complain of hyperpigmentation. This type of pigmentation is called melasma and tends to resolve itself in time. But that time can be rather long since menopause itself lasts a few years. Pregnant women also tend to be at a higher risk of developing an imbalance in pigmentation of skin. Women tend to try various different skin care preparations or doctor prescribed products, and more often than not these are made with some harsh ingredients that compromise the integrity of the skin making it even more vulnerable.

"My skin before had patches, and ever since I started using ROOP, I’ve noticed that the patches have started fading away. It’s a great product, and I feel like it’s helped me a lot for my skin. I highly recommend using ROOP to everyone."

Dryness & Dehydration of Skin Caused By Chemicals in Skin Care Products: Many harsh chemicals like SLSs, alcohols etc leave skin dry and dehydrated. Unfortunately, this is not immediately perceptible but builds over a period of time. When skin is dehydrated it needs even more product (which might have been the culprit in the first place). Can you imagine how this can be a vicious cycle? Dehydrated skin tends to look patchy and pigmented. Any existing issues of hyperpigmentation can look far more pronounced if the skin is dehydrated. Pick products made with natural ingredients that have the capacity to undo the damage, nourish skin and leave it protected at all times.

Burns, Scratches, Acne, etc:  When skin is inflamed due to any of these reasons it can build scar tissue and more often than not pigmentation over the area. This tends to be reversible in time. If acne is the reason for blemishes and pigmented areas, then the best bet is the reduction in acne leading up to a reduction in pigmented spots.

Lifestyle & Prescription Drugs: Many prescription drugs can give rise to hyperpigmentation of skin. This can be listed as one of the side effects of the drug. Lifestyle can include lack of adequate sleep or intake of foods that have harsh chemicals like preservatives, colors and many other additives in them. As discussed in the previous article about under eye dark circles, the body tends to need more of these foods to feel satiated. In that, it is also exposed to more of these undesirable additives. In all, our liver can be overworked in detoxifying the body (its main function). A sluggish liver may cause hyperpigmentation of skin (per Ayurveda). Liver spots are pretty common as the liver function diminishes with age.  Perhaps it is this load on the liver (to metabolize drugs) that also ultimately leads to the side effect of pigmented patches of skin. It is a reasonable hypothesis to make.

3 At-Home Remedies to Help

The following 3 homemade face mask recipes are wonderful in the reduction of the appearance of hyperpigmentation. Each one has at least one ingredient that is known to speed up the exfoliation of skin. What does that mean? It means the uppermost layer of skin is shed faster revealing skin underneath that is fresh and very healthy. Try a recipe today and let me know your thoughts in comments below. All of these recipes require that the ingredients are well mixed and then the face mask applied and left on the skin for 12-15 minutes. After washing with lukewarm water, a serum and lotion should be applied to the skin to rehydrate and nourish.

One:

2 tsp. of potato juice (well known in Ayurveda for its anti-pigmentation properties)

1 tsp. of lemon juice

Enough rice flour to make a paste

Two:

3 tsp. of powdered brown sugar (natural glycolic acid in brown sugar exfoliates)

1 tsp. of pineapple juice

Enough rosewater to make a paste

Three:

2 tsp. of fuller’s earth

3 tsp. of tomato juice

Enough coconut milk to make a paste
