Top 5 Home Remedies to Fade Hyperpigmentation, melasma & Dark Spots Quickly

Posted on Wednesday, December 07, 2016 AT 1:39 PM By Sheetal Rawal

Hyperpigmentation may not be a serious medical condition. However, it leaves your skin patchy and may deal a blow on your self-confidence. Hyperpigmentation is the darkening of certain areas of the skin due to the overproduction of pigment or melanin in those areas. It is usually caused by overexposure to the sun, skin inflammation due to injury, disease, emotional stress. Certain medications can cause hyperpigmentation also. In some cases, genetics, birth control pills, and hormonal imbalances during pregnancy or after play a part in causing hyperpigmentation.

Common Treatments for Hyperpigmentation or Dark Spots

Laser, chemical peels, and topical creams are commonly used for treatment of hyperpigmentation of skin. Unfortunately, most of these methods to lighten pigmentation are harsh on the skin and often cause undesired reactions. The skin is left sensitive and dehydrated due to the harsh nature of these methods. When harsh chemicals such as glycolic acid and bleaches seep into the skin, they result to such problems as heat sensitivity, discoloration, itchiness, pimples, and a myriad of other health conditions.  Such compromised skin is unable to defend itself adequately and thus becomes very vulnerable and manifests problems that only add to the frustration.

Fortunately, there are easy natural ingredients that can come to the rescue. Most of these ingredients are commonly available and have been used for centuries in skin care. They chiefly work by increasing the cell turnover (rate at which the upper skin cells shed).

5 Effective Natural Ingredients & Remedies to Lighten Melasma, Dark Spots and Patches

1. Potato Juice

Potato juice has been used in Ayurveda to lighten hyper pigmentation for a very long time. It might still be a mystery as to how this simple vegetable helps, but the fact is that it has been used successfully.

Home Remedy:

Grate a potato and squeeze the juice out. Apply the juice on the affected areas of your skin 1-2 times a week. Wipe off in 15 minutes and never forget to use your serum and lotion right after. Potato juice can cause dryness in some users, so it is very essential to have a daily skin care routine to balance and nourish the skin morning and night.

2. Cucumber and Lemon

Lemon and cucumber are natural anti-pigmentation agents that work wonders. Citric acid is an alpha hydroxy acid found abundantly in lemons and it works by removing the top layers of your skin quickly. Due to this it too can cause the skin to become a bit dry; therefore it is not optional to use a serum and lotion daily. A complete routine must be followed to help your skin reap the benefits of lemon juice.

Cucumber juice is high in vitamin C: an antioxidant that helps hyperpigmentation by fighting and keeping in check the free radical damage our skin suffers due to many factors. Excess sun exposure and poor lifestyle are leading causes of excess free radical damage.

Home Remedy:

Cut a lemon in half and squeeze out the juice. Apply the lemon juice on the affected area. This can be done 1-2 times a week. Wash in about 15 minutes and apply plenty of serum and lotion to rehydrate your skin.

When hyper pigmentation appears as dark circles, anything too acidic is out of the question. In this case a cucumber can be cut into thin circular pieces and applied directly on closed eyes. Let it stay there for at least ten minutes twice week. After 10-12 minutes gently wipe your eye area with aloe vera juice and apply your eye serum right after. A natural and high quality eye serum can be your best friend to keep those raccoon eyes at bay.

3. Papaya Fruit

The papain enzyme in the papaya fruit is a potent skin lightener. This is no new news! We have known this for ages an thus have used papaya for the longest time to lighten hyperpigmentation, melasma and dark spots of skin.

Home Remedy:

On application of raw papaya juice or pulp on pigmented skin, the dark patches can get lighter and eventually disappear. Cut a green papaya into half and scoop the fleshy part into a bowl. Mash with a fork or in a kitchen blender. Apply on your skin and let it sit for about 12 minutes. Some of this pulp may not stick and fall off, but that is ok. As long as the juice is on your skin, you are on the right track. Using this remedy 1-2 times a week is ideal. Follow with your serum and lotion.

4. Aloe Vera Gel

Aloe Vera contains ingredients helps in restoring the skin to its potential flawlessness. It helps in healing the skin and promotes regeneration of new skin cells. This article goes into depth on the subject of aloe vera and how you must use it on your skin regularly.

Home Remedy:

Cut a fleshy aloe Vera leaf and spilt it into half. Now you can scoop out the gel with a spoon. Apply the gel on the affected areas and massage the skin for a minute with it. Leave the gel for about 15 minutes and then wash the skin with lukewarm water. Aloe vera gel too can leave the skin a bit dry due to its skin renewal properties, so use serum and lotion right after.

5. Tomato Juice and Fuller’s Earth

This fabulous combination is beyond compare to lighten hyperpigmentation, dark spots and melasma. Tomatoes are a source of sulfur which exfoliates the skin and reveals the layers underneath that are healthier. Sulfur (called gandhak in Sanskrit) has been used in Ayurveda for the longest time for its skin healing and renewal properties. Fuller’s earth is a magical clay with mild and natural skin bleaching properties. It also detoxifies and firms up your skin.

Home Remedy:

To a tablespoonful of fuller’s earth add enough fresh tomato juice to make a thick paste. Apply on your skin and wash when dry. This takes about 10-12 minutes. Keeping this mask on your skin for longer after it has dried is not a good idea. It can cause dryness. Use this remedy 1-2 times a week and by now you all know what is coming next. Use your serum and lotion right after. It could well be a mistake not to!
